THE STORY OF A HOTEL
IN A CHAPTER OF KANDY
It began with a dream. At 44, Mr. John Atul Panabokke turned from a path of comfort to follow a vision – to shape his ancestral home into a haven where Kandy’s soul could be shared and every guest welcomed as family. With the grace and unwavering support of his wife, Mrs. Lalanawathie Ratwatte Panabokke, Mahaweli Reach opened its doors in 1972 – a modest four-room guesthouse set upon 4.5 acres of land steeped in memory and promise.
Word of this gracious little retreat quickly spread, and by 1976, Mahaweli Reach had grown to 23 rooms. Just a few years later, in 1982, it had expanded to 50 – becoming a name synonymous with heartfelt hospitality.
At the heart of its success was family. Jayantha Panabokke, the eldest son, brought his passion and expertise after studying at Trinity College and training at Queen’s Hotel, Kandy. His brothers, Mohan and Dihan Panabokke, also played instrumental roles, each adopting their father’s dream. Together, they shaped Mahaweli Reach, ensuring it remained a place of genuine care and comfort.
The years between 1983 and 1990 were difficult for Sri Lanka, as civil unrest cast uncertainty over the nation. Yet, through it all, the Panabokke family remained strong, keeping Mahaweli Reach not only open, but a symbol for stability. More than a hotel, it was a source of livelihood for the local community –where kindness endured in the most trying times.
As peace returned, so did guests. And in 1993, a bold new chapter began– the transformation into a five-star hotel. Though John Atul Panabokke did not live to see its completion, he passed knowing that his dream was in the good hands of family.
Reopening in 1994 with 112 rooms combined with expanded banquet and conference facilities, Mahaweli Reach became the first five-star hotel in Sri Lanka’s Central region by 2000. A landmark achievement under the stewardship of its founding family, it solidified the hotel’s reputation for refined luxury and heartfelt service.
The journey continued in 2003 when Mahaweli Reach partnered with the prestigious Universal Group of Maldives, ensuring its legacy would endure while embracing new opportunities. Mr. Jayantha Panabokke and the next generation of family, continued the journey of success for Mahaweli Reach together with Universal Group through turbulent times.Today, the hotel remains true to Mr. John Atul Panabokke’s vision – a blend of tradition and modern sophistication – where guests return for the warmth, care, and sense of belonging within Kandy’s beautiful landscape.
